Senate rejects Iran war powers resolution 49-50. Four Republicans cross over; one Democrat crosses back.

On Thursday the Senate turned down a Democratic-led resolution that would have directed the President to remove U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran unless Congress declares war or specifically authorizes it. The vote was 49 to 50. CBS News reports that Senators Collins, Murkowski, Paul and Tillis voted with Democrats, and Senator Fetterman voted against. Tillis said he voted yes because 60 days had passed since the administration told Congress in July that military action had restarted, which is the clock the 1973 War Powers Resolution sets. The House adopted the measure 214 to 208 in July. This is likely the last war-powers vote before the midterms. Proverbs warns that where there is no counsel, the people fall. Whatever you think of this war, now past seven months, the Constitution gives Congress the war power so that the question gets argued in the open. By one vote, the Senate declined to press it. The voters get their say in November.
