F-Droid, the no-tracking Android app store, just got its first big makeover in 10 years.

Here's one for the app shelf. F-Droid is a community-run store for free and open-source Android apps, and unlike the Play Store it doesn't track your taps to push ads at you. Per Ars Technica, version 2.0 is rolling out now: rebuilt from scratch, searchable by app descriptions (not just names), and able to handle multiple downloads at once. The practical upgrade: F-Droid now uses Android's pre-approval system, so you confirm an install before the download instead of wrestling with the old sideloading warning afterward. It also installs updates automatically by default, though you can turn that off. One caution from F-Droid's own announcement: a 'panic' feature that wipes certain apps in an emergency hasn't returned yet. Anyone who relies on it may want to hold off updating. The rollout takes about two weeks. If you've never tried an alternative app store, this is a good time to take a look. Just stick to reputable sources, and read what you install.
