Now, cher, before you set out that cheese board this weekend, go look in the icebox. The FDA and CDC are investigating a multistate E. coli outbreak potentially linked to Sierra Nevada Graziers raw milk cheese, Good Morning America reports. Thirteen people in nine states have gotten sick. Eight were hospitalized and three developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious complication. No deaths have been reported. Cases are in California, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Tennessee and Utah, and the FDA says all nine patients it interviewed reported eating this cheese. The company is recalling all of its Graziers raw milk cheese on the market: medium cheddar, sharp cheddar, jalapeno jack and Monterey jack, in 8-ounce and 16-ounce packages and 5-pound food-service loaves. The FDA says throw it out or take it back for a refund, then clean and sanitize anything it touched. Health officials have long warned that raw milk products skip pasteurization, the step that kills bacteria. The old kitchen rule still holds: when in doubt, throw it out. A good cheddar is easy to replace. Your people aren't.
