A Florida Republican wants federal agents to get a warrant before they tap America's license-plate cameras. Rep. Greg Steube's Flafo Act would require a judicial warrant before federal agencies could buy, operate, access or share data from networked plate readers, and would tie Justice Department grants to local police adopting similar rules, The Guardian reports. "Americans should not be tracked everywhere they drive without a warrant," Steube said. It's the third such bill in a month. Kentucky Republican Thomas Massie's Flock-Off Act drew co-sponsors including Democrat Ro Khanna and Republicans Chip Roy and Lauren Boebert, and Illinois Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi teamed with Texas Republican Michael Cloud on the No Flock Act. The main target is Flock Safety, which runs about 120,000 cameras, according to its website, logging plates, makes, models and locations into databases police elsewhere can search. Cities in 36 states have canceled Flock contracts, per a watchdog's tracker, and the Institute for Justice says it has documented more than 200 abuse cases, including stalking. President Trump says he likes the cameras. My standard doesn't change with the party in power: a system that logs where every car goes is a search, and searches need warrants.
