Lee Beebe Jr. waited a whole year for a night like Friday, the Associated Press reports. With starter Turbo Richard out after a lower right leg injury in the first half, Beebe carried 24 times for 203 yards and a touchdown, and Indiana, the defending national champion, held off Northwestern 29-23 in Bloomington. The Hoosiers, now 4-0 and 1-0 in the Big Ten, ran the Football Bowl Subdivision's longest active winning streak to 20 games and their home streak to 19. It got tight. Indiana led 12-0 at the half and held the Wildcats to 51 total yards, but Aidan Chiles went 22 of 29 for 293 yards with touchdown passes and ran for another score as Northwestern clawed back. After the Wildcats cut it to 22-20, Beebe broke a 70-yard run to the 5, and six plays later Josh Hoover scored from a yard out with 1:56 left. Jackson Kleather's 42-yard field goal made it a one-score game with 58 seconds to go, but Northwestern couldn't recover the onside kick. "That guy's got a lot of heart," coach Curt Cignetti said of Beebe. "It was all grit and heart." Northwestern coach David Braun didn't sugarcoat it: "We should be coming out of here with the win." Coach's closing line: the backup's job is to be ready on Tuesday, because nobody tells him which Friday he'll be needed.
