Now, cher, before you thaw those short ribs for Sunday supper, go look in the freezer. Star Meat Delivery Inc. of Lucama, North Carolina, is recalling 167,639 pounds of raw pork, beef and goat products that were produced without federal inspection and carry a false USDA mark with the number "EST. 1363," which has no federal grant of inspection, CNN reports. The USDA says the products should be considered misbranded and unsafe to eat. It's a Class I recall, the agency's highest health risk, meaning a "health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death." No illnesses or injuries have been confirmed. The meat was produced on several dates before Sept. 22 and shipped to A&D Foods, a distributor in Georgia, then on to retailers and restaurants. Twenty-three products are affected, including slice ribeye, beef oxtail cut, beef short ribs, goat cut and ground pork. Here's the tricky part: some shops put their own price stickers over the packaging, so you may not see the bad label at all. "Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them," the USDA said. Throw it out or take it back, and if you're not sure where your oxtail came from, ask your butcher straight out. Anybody who feeds people knows that inspection stamp is a promise. When the promise is fake, nothing behind it can be trusted.
